The Ultimate Guide to Dental Implants: Qualifications of a Dental Implant Doctor

Introduction

Welcome back to our blog series, “The Ultimate Guide to Dental Implants,” by New Smiles in Sherwood, Oregon. In our first post, we explored the basics of dental implants, including their definition, history, and the importance of guided surgery. In this post, we will delve into the various qualifications of a dental implant doctor.

When considering dental implants, choosing a qualified dental professional is crucial. Here’s what you need to know:

Oregon Law on Dental Implant Specialization

In Oregon, dentists must meet specific requirements to place dental implants legally. As of January 1, 2024, this includes completing 56 hours of hands-on clinical implant training at an appropriate postgraduate level. While board certification from the American Board of Oral Implantology (ABOI) is a valuable credential demonstrating a high level of expertise in implant dentistry, it is not mandatory for placing implants in Oregon.

Dentists who have completed the required training can legally provide implant services. However, it’s always recommended to thoroughly research a dentist’s qualifications, including their education, training, and experience with implant procedures, before undergoing treatment. You can also check for ABOI certification and look for online reviews to learn more about their expertise and patient satisfaction.

How to Know If Your Dentist is Qualified

Oregon law requires dentists to complete at least 56 hours of education in dental implants before they can begin placing them in patients. However, additional training and hands-on experience are crucial factors. Look for dentists who have pursued further education, training, and certifications in implant dentistry.

Diplomate Status with ABOI and Fellowship with AAID

  • Diplomate Status with ABOI: This certification indicates that a dentist has achieved the highest level of competence in implant dentistry, demonstrating advanced knowledge and skill.
  • Fellowship with AAID: The American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) offers a fellowship program where dentists can further their education and experience in implant dentistry, showcasing their commitment to excellence.

Dr. Ben Aanderud and Dr. Nathan Doyel are both Diplomates with the ABOI and Fellows with the AAID. That means they have the highest level of training in implant dentistry and they are considered implant specialists in Oregon. Our patients can rest assured that they are in good hands with New Smiles.

Our next post will cover the detailed dental implant procedure, proper care and maintenance, potential risks, and how to mitigate them. Stay tuned!
